I'm still enjoying this series, but didn't like this book as much as the others. The plot was too disjointed, with too many threads started, then dropped. Most were wrapped up by the end, but it could've been a smoother read along the way with better planning. This uneven plotting made the book less of a page-turner than the others, but it was still interesting enough for 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars. Moving on to the next one. :)

My sister bought this book for my son who is now 17 months old. This was one of my favorite books to read as well as my sister when we were kids and we're in our 30's now. Who would have thought it would still be published and loved by kids now? I read it to my son and he loves it too! It has silly drama from Grover, who is paranoid that you will keep turning pages and get him face to face with a monster. It has great illustrations of brick walls and ropes and other things that Grover builds, along with his pleas, to try to keep you from turning the page. A great addition to your Little Golden Book collection or any young kid's book collection.

This is a review of the whole Malazan Book of the Fallen series, which starts with this book. Plot-wise I won't say much but this is epic fantasy about 500,000 years of civilizations, gods, and conflict all building to a great convergence. Each book has a discrete plot that intertwines with the other books to creat a massive character driven story.

As a hobbyist world builder I am in awe of this magnificent construction. Mr Erikson and another guy (who writes other books in this world!) used this as a custom AD&D setting for years and finally developed it enough to bring their gaming to life. WOW. I have never seen as intricate a world and that includes Middle Earth. This world takes a whole lot of conventions and doesn't use them. Huh? Yep, there's plenty of stuff that's familiar but completely original. Those aren't elves, those aren't orcs, but yes, those are 300,000 year old undead neanderthals.

Not only is the shear scope of the world astounding, the fact that there are SO MANY points of view is great. Mr Erikson manages to tell a story that spans, literally, this whole planet and several "realms" (kind of like pocket dimensions) with races, cultures, and species all unique in perspective. Each character is defined by their culture and background but also their personal experiences. You never feel, reading these stories, that a character is just a fill out the blanks, cookie-cutter construction. Every one of them resonates and has a history.

Something else along that line that I love about Mr Erikson's writing is that he is able to give each character a unique personality. His dour, succinct characters really feel grumpy and his light-hearted inane characters really seem silly. So often in literature it's obvious that it's the same person writing dialog for all the people on the page. Not so here. I am floored that with SO MANY different characters they each remain completely distinct throughout the whole series. It makes the movie in your head that much easier to see.

This is definitely epic fantasy, told from the ground floor. You are in it, as it happens, yet still have the benefit of the overview, the whole puzzle. I'd say that at least half of the story revolves around soldiers because it's a novel of empire. But it keeps evolving and expanding to include the entire world, so to say it is military fiction is limiting. Every situation grows into every other situation. The second book follows the first one and the third book takes place on a different part of the world at the same time as the second. It is so engrossing to see how all these stories intertwine and create new stories.

One last thing to mention is pacing. One of the benefits of epic stories, with large casts, is that the POV changes often enough to stay interesting. However, Mr Erikson avoids killing the mood by pulling away from something gripping to follow an undeveloped plot line. And I mean he keeps this pacing for 10 big fat novels. That's impressive.

The Harry Potter books are jewels in the realm of fantasy novels. They get better and better as novels become larger in length. Chamber of Secrets offered one of the best mysteries I've read in a long time, as does the rest of the series. I think you will find that nothing in the world of Harry Potter is predictable and every suprise comes splendidly. I've read 4 of the 7 books before, and I recall Chamber of Secrets being my favorite. If you loved Sorcerer's Stone, then you will be thankful that the following books never decay in quality.

Mystery, Suspense, Wonder, and Wicked Fun await you. As the wizarding world broadens we are always left wanting more. I reccomend these tyrant stories of the fantasy world to any type of reader. I doubt there are many people in this world who can manage to dislike Harry Potter after reading it. Chamber of Secrets offers no secrets to steer you away. Harry Potter: Book 2 is solid and dashing without flaw.

I first read Charlaine Harris's `Lily Bard' series shortly after discovering her `Southern Vampire: Sookie Stackhouse' books. I wanted to fill the Sookie void between books, and thought reading Harris's previous works would be a good start. I'm so glad I did, because this series is now one of my all-time favourites.

`Lily Bard' is by far Harris's darkest work. When Charlaine Harris was younger she was the victim of a sexual assault. With this knowledge in mind, it becomes clear that the `Lily Bard' series is perhaps closest to Charlaine's heart.

Lily Bard has a tragic history. She is a rape survivor. So horrific and awful was the assault, and so dramatic was her escape, that Lily's name and story were in the news for months following her recovery. Because of the undue media attention Lily effectively went into hiding; finding the small town of Shakespeare, Arkansas on a map and deciding that she would live out her life in solitude. Before escaping into anonymity Lily underwent a physical change; she discovered bodybuilding and set herself the task of making her body into a weapon so that she would never again feel physically threatened.

I love Charlaine Harris. She is a beautiful writer, able to effortlessly flip between fresh prose and acerbic wit. Her stories are often fanciful, but grounded in reality. And her heroines all follow the same mould of being utterly ordinary women living extraordinary lives. Sookie Stackhouse, for instance, is a thoroughly ordinary waitress whose life is irrevocably changed when a vampire walks into her town. Likewise, Lily Bard is a cleaning lady whose loner-existence is changed when her landlord is murdered. Charlaine's other murder-mystery series, `Aurora Teagarden', has a title character who is a librarian but finds herself thrown into a murder investigation when a friend is found bludgeoned to death.
The contrast of ordinary woman/extraordinary circumstances has more meaning in the `Lily Bard' series than any other of Charlaine's works. Lily's extraordinary circumstances can be stretched to the event that brought her to Shakespeare, Arkansas to begin with - her rape. Lily was an ordinary girl when one event changed the entire trajectory of her life.

The `Lily Bard' series is very dark - far more so than Charlaine's other books, even the most recent Sookie novels. But surprisingly enough the Bard series has a very clear, uplifting message at its centre. The series is ultimately about reconnecting. In the beginning Lily is a determined loner, scarred by the events of her past, Lily is convinced that the key to her well-being lies in never allowing anyone to get close to her. Over the course of five books however, we witness Lily making tentative connections with those around her - she finds romance, love, and friendship and learns that these connections are important to her continued physical and mental recovery. It is a beautiful message - and seems to be Charlaine imparting her own wisdom to victims about how to continue living your life without fear of the past. And although the series has a lot of darkness, it ultimately ends on a high-note and happy ending.

I love this series, not least of all because of Lily Bard herself. Lily is a ballsy, funny, loyal and hard-working woman. When you learn, in explicit detail, the events of her rape your respect for Lily increases ten-fold. In the beginning Lily is defined by the rape. The ordeal shaped her entire life - she moved far away from home (and the pitying looks of family and friends) to live out a life in quiet, safe solitude. She began bodybuilding as a means to protect herself, so fearful that the past would repeat itself. Clearly letting tragedy define who you become is no way to live - and Charlaine articulates this message beautifully through the character of Lily as she evolves throughout the five books. In each book there is a new murder-mystery, and as the local cleaning lady privy to the skeletons in her client's closets, Lily finds herself at the centre of all of the cases. Through these mysteries Lily is able to measure her own mettle, push herself and discover the levels of her bravery;

I also love this series because of the romance at its centre. In book two `Shakespare's Champion' Lily finds her leading man - Jack Leeds - and trust me when I say he is H-O-T. The Bard series also has one of my all-time favourite secondary characters - Bobo - the son of one of Lily's cleaning clients who pines after her in the sweetest puppy-love fashion.

If fans of the `Sooke Stackhouse' books come to the `Lily Bard' series with a hope that it will scratch a Sookie itch, they will be disappointed. This is in no way supernatural or urban fantasy. This series is strictly murder-mystery. The only similarities between the books are Charlaine's love of a good, steamy romance for her heroines, ordinary leading ladies leading extraordinary lives and doing so with tremendous courage and biting wit.
Highly recommend this series.

Admittedly this books predecessor could get annoying. But not so much that I didn't want to finish the series. And "Possession" has an up side something new to offer to the reader other than constant indecision and some sex and violence (not always mutually exclusive) opens up the world Carrie was forced into by becoming a vampire.

Things were going just fine for Carrie and her new sire Nathan (if you say ignoring their mutual attraction in any adult way) when suddenly Nathan was possessed and carving weird symbols into his arms that despite the vampire thing won't heal. And things get worse when he kills someone and the movement sends out an execution order.

Carrie knows she needs help so her turns to Nathan friends Max (also a movement assassin) and heads to movement headquarters in Spain to plea for Nathan's life. But while there not only is another assassin (Bella, a werewolf) assigned to the killing as Max is seen as biased, Carrie learns from an ancient vampire known as the Oracle that the soul eater her old sire (Cyrus' father) is trying to make himself into a god.

Leaving Max and Bella to track Nathan (Max to try and save him Bella to kill him) Carrie takes off following a rumor that someone has brought Cyrus back to life on the slim chance he'll know how to help Nathan as the soul eater is Nathan's sire.

Like the first book this novel is filled with Carrie changing her mind every ten seconds about anything regarding her emotional life. Unlike the last we get third person scenes from Max (very funny) and Cyrus (being dead changed him.) All in all this book is just as fun as the last while being less annoying.

Four stars.
